
Mary Peterson Arnold Ph.D. has been head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication since Fall 2002. A native of Mitchell, Arnold was most recently a journalism professor at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. She was also director of the ASNE (American Society of Newspaper Editors) High School Journalism Institute.
She was a faculty member at the University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication from 1986 to 1996 where she was director of the Iowa High School Press Association and summer journalism workshops. She managed youth editorial and diversity programs for the Newspaper Association of America Foundation in Vienna, Va., from 1996 to 2001.
Recently, she was part of a team working on the five-year Women in Media project at Northwestern University's Media Management Center. She was first author on a series of four book-length reports on women in media senior management positions. They are:
