SDSU trio creates success in marketing at SDN

Marketing and Member Relations Manager Vernon Brown (1990, Broadcast) recruited Renee Halgerson (2005, Advertising) to the SDN Communications marketing team in Sioux Falls, SD. Halgerson joined SDN’s staff in May as a marketing specialist. The pair handles all marketing and public relations for the telecommunications company. Brown also hired SDSU advertising student Kristy Andersen as a summer marketing intern. The trio is a perfect example of how each of the sequences of the SDSU Journalism and Mass Communications Department can work together to form a dynamic, successful team.


John and Michelle (Selchert) Andrews moving to Yankton

Husband and wife SDSU graduates John (2002, Broadcasting) and Michelle (Selchert, 2004 News Editorial) are moving to Yankton. John, a former Brookings Register reporter, will seek his M.A. in History from the University of South Dakota. Michelle will be teaching 6th grade at Yankton Middle School. They have a 21-month-old son, Joseph.


Aust is communication director for Associated School Boards of S.D.

As the organization's first director of communciations, Brian Aust (Advertising 2002) directs all public relations and marketing activities for the Associated School Boards of South Dakota.


Bergheim is news director for KJAM radio in Madison

Broadcast Journalism graduate (1994), Sue (Kueter) Bergheim has been News Direcotr for KJAM radio in Madison since August 2000. Before that she was a producer and assignment editor for KDLT-TV in Sioux Falls. Bergheimm is married and has two children, a daughter, 6, and a son, 3.


Graduates Bickel and Wendell married in Firesteel, S.D.

Kelly Bickel and Nick Wendell, both graduates of the SDSU journalism program, were wed in Firesteel, SD on Saturday, August 20th. Kelly (2003, Advertising) and Nick (2004, Advertising) will make their home in Sioux Falls. Kelly is a Communications Specialist at Midland National Life Insurance and Nick is employed as a client service executive at Insight Marketing Design.


Bischoff named Sioux Falls Arena sales and marketing manager

The Sioux Falls Arena, Orpheum Theater and Falls Overlook Café are pleased to announce Abby Bischoff as their new Sales and Marketing Manager. Bischoff, a Huron native, is a 2004 (News Editorial) graduate of South Dakota State University. While obtaining her degree in journalism, Bischoff was active with student senate and the University Program Council, where she served as Hobo Day Grand Pooba and Concerts Coordinator. Bischoff hopes to bring a fresh approach to the position with her knowledge of event planning and marketing along with her passion for the entertainment industry. “A dynamic position like this comes along very rarely and I am excited to join one of the largest entertainment facilities in the area,” Bischoff said. In her new position as Sales and Marketing Manager, Bischoff will be responsible for the development and implementation of marketing procedures and advertising initiatives for the Sioux Falls Arena and Orpheum Theater. Deanna Knutson Boone (1972, News Editorial) is Director of Community Relations for the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, Minn. Boone and her husband Loren J. Boone (1972, News Editorial) live in St. Cloud, Minn.

Bradley is publisher of Denver magazine

Kent Bradley (1998, Advertising) was named publisher of Performance Business magazine, a trade magazine geared towards to the hardcore and street performance industry. Bradley was hired as an account executive in 1998 by National Business Media, Inc., after completing his internship there.


Branting is director of Internet organizing for the Mass. ACLU

Becky Branting (1996, News Editorial) is the director of Internet organizing for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Massachusetts. She likes to joke that she's a better dressed Joe Trippi. Becky holds a masters degree in education from Harvard University and lives in Boston with her husband, Jim Poss.


Sharlet (Brown) Teigen is Senior Partner of Demeter Solutions

Sharlet (Brown) Teigen is now Senior Partner of Demeter Solutions (www.demetersolutionsgroup.com [External Hyperlink]), a marketing and public relations firm. Demeter specializes in food and agribusiness. The firm is built upon a virtual model, with its members located throughout the U.S. Sharlet has more than 20 years experience in marketing communications and was previously employed by the National Live Stock and Meat Board (Chicago), Osborn & Barr Communications (St. Louis), GTA Feeds (Sioux Falls) and American Dairy Association of SD.


Card is marketing coordinator for architecture firm

Kjersten Card (Advertising 2005) is the Marketing Coordinator at Koch Hazard Architects, an architecture, planning and interiors firm in Sioux Falls. The firm practices on a regional basis with clients in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. Card egan working at Koch Hazard in May 2005. She is responsible for coordinating all marketing, advertising and public relations activities for the firm.

Cole works in marketing for Oregon retail chain

Carrie (Feser) Cole (2002, Advertising) is working in the marketing department for Coastal Farm & Ranch, a chain of retail stores headquartered in Albany Oregon. This is Carrie’s third year with the company. While at SDSU, she completed internships with Davis & Company (media buying agency) in Washington DC, and BOC Advertising in Portland, OR. She married an SDSU alumnus, Charles Cole, who is employed at Oregon State University in the Crop & Soil Science department.


Cowan is co-anchor for WDAZ-TV in Grand Forks, N.D.

Lori Cowan (broadcast journalism 2003) co-anchors the 10 p.m. newscast on WDAZ-TV in Grand Forks, N.D. Cowan was hired as a general assignment reporter by WDAZ after she graduated in 2003. Her story, "Remembering Dru Sjodin," recently earned an award in the Small Market General Reporting category at the Northwest Broadcast News Association.


DeLay joins Wells Fargo Financial in Sioux Falls

Anne (Eidem) DeLay (advertising 2001) has joined Wells Fargo Financial in Sioux Falls as a Marketing Consultant. Previously, she worked in the account service and media departments at Media One Advertising and ADwerks, Inc. both of Sioux Falls. She is a current MBA candidate at the University of Sioux Falls.


Falconer a special projects coordinator at the Argus Leader

Lisa Falconer (2005, News Editorial) has joined the staff of the Sioux Falls Argus Leader as a special projects coordinator. Falconer will coordinate production of special issue magazines like Homefront, South Dakota Nurse, Connections and others published by the Argus Leader.


Froke granted emeritus status at Penn State

Marlowe D. Froke (Journalism 1951) was recently named Associate Professor and General Manager, WPSX-TV, Emeritus by Graham Spanier, President of The Pennsylvania State University. Froke taught at the College of Journalism and Communications since 1959, retiring in 1991.


Garrity is associate media director for a Houston advertising agency

Gina Garrity (1992, Advertising) is the associate media director for Rives Carlberg, Houston, TX, a full service advertising agency. Gina recently won the Media Magazine award for the Houston Chronicle Redesign Campaign for most creative media plan. She lives in Pearland, TX, with her husband, Tom, who is president of the Houston Aeros. They have two children, Caitlyn (4) and Connor (2) and are expecting a new addition in February.


Griffith joins KELO-TV as sales consultant

Nichole Griffith (2002 News Editorial) began working as a sales assistant at KELO-TV in Sioux Falls in July 2005.


Harrelson covers Colorado State Legislature

Danie Harrelson (2001, News Editorial) covers the Colorado State Legislature as a political reporter for the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel.


Heine is a public affairs specialist for Dow Agrosciences LLC

Ag Journalism graduate (1992), Robyn Heine, is leading the global Public Affairs team at Dow AgroSciences. In her role as global Public Affairs leader, she is responsible for the company's internal and external communications function including: employee communications, media relations, brand management, executive communications and crisis communications. The world headquarters of Dow AgroSciences is located in Indianapolis, Indiana.


Monica (Nelson) Hoffman working at Phoenix radio station

Monica (Nelson) Hoffman, a 1992 graduate, works at 98.7-FM, "The Peak" in Phoenix as a radio personality. In 2000, she married SDSU alumnus Mark Hoffman and they have two sons, ages 2 and 3.


Hoffner appointed AP's New York City news editor

Josh Hoffner, an editor on the National Desk of The Associated Press, has been named news editor for New York City. Hoffner joined the AP in 1998 in Bismarck, N.D., and worked there for two years. He is a North Dakota native and 1998 graduate of SDSU.


Hohensee owns Louisiana communications company

Lynn E. Hohensee (1971 News Editorial) owns and operates LEH Communications, LLC, a communications consulting company in Lake Charles, La., specializing in marketing communications and public relations support for small, medium and large businesses and non-profit organizations. He served as Executive Director of The Chamber Foundation/Southwest Louisiana in Lake Charles, La., prior to opening his business in August 2005. He joined The Chamber/Southwest Louisiana in June 2003 as the Director of Economic Development & Investor Relations for the Chamber/Southwest Louisiana. In February 2003, Hohensee formally retired from ConocoPhillips (formerly Conoco) after 22 years of service. In his final position with ConocoPhillips, he served as the regional director-public relations for company’s Gulf Coast Business Unit headquartered in Lake Charles, from March 1999 to September 2002. He joined Conoco in 1981 in Houston as editor-corporate publications and later served as senior coordinator for marketing communications and senior coordinator for speaker services. Prior to relocating to Lake Charles in 1999, Hohensee served as the company’s director of public relations for the Northwest area (1987-1988) and regional director-public affairs for the company’s Mid-continent Business Unit (1988-1999) in Ponca City, Okla. Prior to joining Conoco, he held corporate communications/community relations positions for Shell Oil Company for eight years in Louisiana and Texas. Paralleling his civilian corporate communications career, Hohensee pursued a 28-year public affairs career in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve. He is a graduate of the Department of Defense Information School and the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College. He retired as lieutenant colonel in 1999. He and his wife of 30 years, Marie, have one daughter who works for Proctor & Gamble in Rome, Italy.
