The development of the Roman Empire from the late first century end of the fifth century A.D. The political, economic, social, and cultural systems of the Empire will be considered as well as the “decline and fall of Rome. Major attention will be given to the origins, growth and “triumph of the Christian Church.”

A study of the major European political powers in the 14th-16th centuries.  The course will examine the dramatic changes in politics, society, religion, economics and world view occasioned by the phenomena known as the renaissance and the Reformation.

This course will investigate the role of women in the history of the westernworld. It will attempt to discover what impact women have had on the courseof events. HIST 371 European Ethnic Groups in the U.S. (COM) ...3
An examination of European ethnic groups in America from colonial times to the present with the chief emphasis being on the period from 1820 to 1930. Among the topics covered will be the causes of immigration, the development of ethnic communities in America, and the impace of immigrants and their descendants on American society. Particularly attention will be  paid to the ethnic groups who settled in South Dakota.

Examines major United States economic issues from the colonial period to the present, including the rise of big business, territorial expansion, agricultural issues, labor management relations, and finances and banking.

Aspects of social development, with major emphasis on the period since the Civil War. Themes include gender, class, race, family, education, religion, leisure, music, arts, and values.

HIST 379 Environmental History of the U.S. (COM) ...3
Examines the relationship between the natural environment and the historical movements of humans by tracing U.S. environmental beginning with the activities of the Native American peoples through the Euro-American presence to the Cold War era.

This course surveys important issues in western religious thought from first century Christian origins through the “great medieval synthesis” of the thirteenth century. Using mainly case studies, this course examines the causes and effects, both intended and unintended, of assassinations during the twentieth century. An in-depth historical background to each assassination in included. A considerable portion of the course is devoted to a study of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
