Program Requirements
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS – GLOBAL STUDIES MAJOR, BA DEGREE
Curriculum for the Global Studies Major, Bachelor of Arts:
System General Education Requirements 30 credits Institutional Graduation Requirements 10 credits
Modern Language Requirement (see below) 21-22 credits
Global Studies Major Requirements consisting of: 13 credits
GlSt 201 – Global Studies I 3 credits
GlSt 401 – Global Studies II 1 credit
Cross-Cultural Experience 3 credits
Hist 112 – World Civilizations II or
Hist 122 – Western Civilization Since 1650 3 credits
Pols 253 – Current World Problems 3 credits

*Cross-Cultural Experience: Global studies majors are required to complete a cross-cultural experience outside the United States that includes at least 3 credits of coursework. Examples include:
1) Full time study abroad for one semester at a university outside the United States,
2) A one-semester, paid or unpaid, internship or volunteer service learning project outside the United States,
3) An intense language immersion program for at least 3 hours of credit at an institution of higher education outside the United States, or
4) Study abroad seminar or travel experience outside the United States that includes pre- and post-travel/study orientation and carries 3 hours of credit.
Modern Language Requirement:
I. Option 1 Modern Language Requirement – Bachelor of Arts, Option 1 Spanish or French or German Sequence 18-1 credits Upper Division Language Course 3

Modern Language Requirement – Bachelor of Science, Option 1 Spanish, or French, or German Sequence 14-16 credits
Modern Language Bachelor of Arts, Option 1: 21-22 credits of one language – Spanish, French, or German from the following:
SPAN 101, 102, 201, 202, 211, 212, (18 credits) plus one 3-credit 300 or 400 level Spanish course (21 credits)
FREN 101, 102, 201, 202, (19 credits) plus one 3-credit 300 or 400 level French course (22 credits)
GER 101, 102, 201, 202, 311, 312 (18 credits) plus one 3-credit 300 or 400 level German course (21 credits)
The Depart of Modern Languages has set different requirements for the major in Spanish, German, and French. Students who select German for their option will also complete the minor in German. Students who select Spanish or French must complete three additional credits in 300 or 400 level courses to earn the major in that language.
II. Option 2 – Modern Language Requirement
May be waived if examination shows the student has achieved a level of language learning equivalent to that of students who have completed 20 credit hours and are able to use the language at a basic level of understanding. The Modern Languages Department or Global Studies Advisory Committee have the authority to evaluate. A student may be exempt from examination at SDSU if he or she has successfully completed one or more of the nationally administered tests (ACTFL, CLEP).
III. Option 3 – Modern Language Requirement
Students may fulfill the language requirement through one of the following combinations of experiential education in which a modern foreign language is used:
a.One academic semester of study abroad in an immersion experience in a country where English is not the first language.
b. Experience abroad, such as internships, the equivalent of one semester, where the student uses a language other than English.
c. A combination of less frequently offered language(s) including at least 6 credits of Arabic, Chinese, or Russian, and a study abroad experience for at least 3 credits in a region where one of these languages is spoken.
