The Alpha Alpha Chi Chapter of the international English honorary Sigma Tau Delta was formed in the Spring of 1991 and now boasts 26 members, both graduate and undergraduate. Students are invited to membership based on their high scholastic standing in the major and on their cumulative GPA. A student may become eligible after completion of 60 semester hours of coursework and after having completed four classes in English beyond English 101.
Sigma Tau Delta has over 600 chapters in the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, and Europe, but has the distinction of having been founded at Dakota Wesleyan University in 1924. Membership in the honorary is for life, and the chapters are dedicated to promoting interest in studies in English language and literature, both on the campus and in the community. It encourages worthwhile reading and the study of the literary masterpieces, and fosters fellowship among those who specialize in the discipline of English studies.
The chapter annually hosts a book sale of donated items so that students can begin to build their personal libraries at little expense. In addition, the chapter, in conjunction with the English Club, helps to select pieces for inclusion in the department's literary magazine Oakwood and assists with planning the Great Plains Writers' Conference each year.
