SDSU's English Department offers the M.A. degree in English. There are two areas of study:
Studies in Literature
Studies in Language and Rhetoric
Within these two areas of study, we offer two options for completing the degree:
Option A requires 24 credit hours in the discipline, plus six hours of thesis.
Option C requires 36 credit hours plus a comprehensive examination.
Either option or plan of study is suitable for teachers of English in secondary schools or in community colleges, for those who plan to continue on to the doctorate, for technical writing/editing positions, or for those who just like the study of English. Two years of undergraduate credit on the transcript or reading knowledge of a modern foreign language is required.
Graduate Teaching Assistantships
The department offers graduate teaching assistantships at stipends of approximately $10,00 for the nine-month academic year of teaching two sections of composition per semester. Teaching Assistants pay one-third of resident tuition. They are provided office space and have faculty library status.
