Programs of Study



A student may major or minor in Communication Studies and Theatre, elect courses for self improvement, take courses to meet humanities requirements, or participate in speech activities. The major may choose any of the following specializations: Speech Communication (SpCm); Speech Education (SpEd); or Theatre (Thea).

Theatre
We are proud to offer an outstanding specialization in the area of Theatre. Our program as become one of the most successful and respected programs in the Midwest. You will recieve a broad-based education in theatre through coursework that includes: Directing, Acting, Stagecraft, Lighting, Scenic Design, Costume Design, Makeup and Theatre Arts Management. Your hands-on education will involve all aspects of our program through participation in State University Theatre and Prairie Repertory Theatre.

Speech Communication
Through a diverse curriculum, you have the opportunity to learn about the central role that communication has in our lives. Our department offers courses in Organizational Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Small Group Communication, Public Speaking and many others. We also provide internships where you apply your education to real world environments such as hospitals, businesses, corporations and political organizations, to name a few. Background and experience in the are of communication has become one of the most desired skills for future employment. To meet these needs, you will recieve the training, expertise and background that will provide professional success.

Speech Education
This area of specialization is designed for the person who plans to become a communication educator. While the emphasis is primarily on secondary education, this area can serve as a specialization for teaching in higher education as well. As a speech educator you will be prepared to teach classroom speech, direct drama activities, and coach individual speech events, debate, and oral interpretaion. Graduates from this program are placed throughout the state of South Dakota and the upper Midwest. Many of our speech educators have won regional and national recognition. Outstanding educators in speech and related activities have been a valued tradition and your preparation will be unmatched. You may be considering a career in higher education, if so, our speech education area will prepare you for you future.
