Masters of Science in Communication Studies and Journalism

Option I - Communication Studies
Designed to provide advanced studies in the areas of public address, rhetorical theory, radio/television studies, and theatre arts. This option provides further professional preparation and competencies in the area of communication.

Option II - Journalism
Designed to provide for professional journalists who wish to broaden their education in communication and social sciences; and for individuals with undergraduate degrees in non-journalism specialties who wish to develop their knowledge in mass communication.

Advisory Committee
During the first or early into the second semester of graduate work, the student and his/her advisor should decide upon the composition of the student's Advisory Committee. As a minimum, this committee must consist of:
  • Major Advisor (From Graduate Faculty Committee)
  • Major Department Representative (From List Above)
  • Minor Department Representatvie* (*Inside or Outside minor)
  • Once these individuals have agreed to serve, the advisor will send a letter to the Graduate School Office requesting approval of the composition of the student's Advisory Committee. If approved, the Graduate Dean will then appoint a Graduate Faculty Representative and inform the advisor in letter form.

    Plan of Study
    Sometime early in the second semester, the student is required to file his/her Plan of Study. To begin, the student and the advisor complete a Plan of Study Worksheet (Obtain a copy from the Graduate School). Once completed, the student then types in the information on the actual Plan of Study, obtain necessary signatures and forwards it to the Graduate School for approval. Changes to a Plan of Study must be completed on the proper form and submitted to the Graduate School.



    The Plan of Study Requirements for Communication Studies and Theatre

    A minimum total of 30 credits
    50 percent of the total credits must be numbered 700 or above
    Thesis equals 6 credits (7 credits by special approval of the advisor)
    Supporting Studies equals 8 credits (From two or more disciplines,
    unless one department is sufficiently diverse.
    A student may also elect to have an 'inside minor')
    No more than 2 credits may be workshop
    Thesis sustaining credits do not count in the total credits


    Converted Credits
    The Graduate School allows courses numbered 300-499 to be converted to graduate redit at 80 percent of the original credits, discarding all fractions. Students are allowed to take only two courses for converted and in no case will the amount of converted credits exceed seven(7). These credits may be applied only with the permission of the Advisory Committee and the Dean of the Graduate School.

    Research Tool Requirement
    During the second semester study, students are required to take RTVF 792, Research Methods in Communication. Substitutes are allowed at the discretion of the Graduate Faculty Committee.

    Minimum Credit Requirements
    Graduate Teaching Assistants are required to take no fewer than two(2) courses per semester from the department in which they have their assistantship al long as there are courses to take. Directed and Independent studies should occur toward the conclusion of a student's coursework, rather than the beginning.

    Admission to Candidacy
    After 20 credits have been earned, the student may apply for candidacy (Get the forms from the graduate school). The student must have a 3.00 or higher Grade Point Average, and have successfully completed their proposal meeting with their Advisory Committee.
