The department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees in chemistry and a B.S. in Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
The Chemistry major offers two options: general chemistry and American Chemical Society professional degree programs. The general chemistry program is often taken by students in preparation for medical or dental school, or by students planning to teach high school chemistry. The professional chemistry degree meets the certification requirements of the American Chemical Society. It provides training for students planning to attend graduate school or work in the chemical or biochemical industries. Students have the option of developing an emphasis in biochemistry, environmental chemistry, or materials science.
The clinical lab science major provides a strong background in chemistry and biology as well as rewarding internships in a clinical laboratory. The clinical laboratory scientist performs various laboratory analyses in the areas of hematology, coagulation, microbiology, immunohematology, immunology, clinical chemistry, and urinalysis. Subspecialty areas include molecular diagnostics, cytogenetics, fertility testing, flow cytometry, forensics and infectious disease control. The program of study consists of 3 years of course and lab work followed by a one-year internship with a regional hospital laboratory.
The graduate programs in the department lead to the MS or PhD degree in chemistry. Research programs exist in analytical, biochemistry, chemical education, environmental, organic, and physical chemistry. All students admitted to the graduate program receive a full assistantship to support them during their studies.
