ABS Alumni Scholarship

These scholarships are provided by alumni of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences. Through the SDSU Foundation, students call alumni and friends of the college. These calls support scholarships, make important job contacts and allow us to answer any questions alumni might have concerning their alma mater. The ABS College appreciates these alumni scholarships as a means of promoting excellence in scholarship, leadership, and character.

Robert Chamberlin Scholarship

It is the desire of the donor that we make better use of the present food supply, that the food supply be improved, and new sources of food be found and created. Junior and Senior students at the South Dakota State University who are majoring in agriculture are eligible to receive this scholarship.

The William M. Griffith and Byrne S. Griffith Endowment

The William M. Griffith and Byrne S. Griffith Endowment in Agriculture and the Arts was established by Mr. and Mrs. Griffith in recognition of the vital role of agriculture as the economic lifeblood of South Dakota; and in the belief that for a society to fully flourish there must be cultural enrichment. It is the wish of Mr. and Mrs. Griffith that this endowment serve as a source of inspiration, encouragement, and enlightenment for all who have the opportunity to share in the benefits of the endowment programs.

Burdick Haugen Memorial

The following remarks were made by Mr. Haugen's sister which underscores his life and philosophy "...for he was the most talented person I've ever known. he could do anything he turned his hand to, either drawing comics, woodworking, inlay, metal, leatherwork or engraving. He was the neighborhood fixer of children's bikes and other toys. He designed bird houses and taught Boy Scout groups. He knew the woods, the flowers, the trees and the animals and he was a marvelous story teller."

Blanche Tompkins Henderson and Donald C. Henderson Scholarship

Blanche Tompkins Henderson taught her speciality in Home Economics in various South Dakota secondary schools. She later worked for Russell Miller Milling Company as demonstration agent for the company's chief product, Occident Flour. Donald C. Henderson graduated from the College of Agriculture, University of Illinois in 1924. He was known nationally and internationally for his research and academic work.

John D. Jaspers

The John D. Jaspers Scholarship endowment is established in loving memory of his brief but most productive life of service, caring and dedication to those principles and values characterized so abundantly in his devotion to his family and his church, to his scholastic endeavors, to his fraternal, collegiate and personal associations and friendships, and to his employment responsibilities in his career development.

Leon Lilley Memorial Scholarship

The Leon Lilley Memorial Scholarship was established by friends and family of Mr. Lilley in remembrance of his service to the agricultural industry of which he was a prominent leader. Mr Lilley was employed by the Federal Land Bank in West Union, Iowa and Watertown, SD before coming to Sioux Falls in 1969, becoming the President of the Sioux Falls Land Bank Association.

Nellie McLoughlin Scholarship

The Nellie McLoughlin Scholarship was established by Miss McLoughlin in 1984. A native of South Dakota, she graduated from Mitchell High School, and graduated from SDSU in 1932 with a degree in Home Economics. She received a Master's Degree from Columbia University, New York City. Miss McLoughlin taught country school in Hanson County and Home Economics at Beresford High School. Most of her career was spent as a Home Economist with the South Dakota Extension Service. She served first in Hand County and later as a District Supervisor. She then became State Leader.

Roy Phillips Memorial Scholarship

Roy Phillips was born on a ranch in central Meade County. He attended a rural school and graduated from Aggie School in Brookings in 1940. After his graduation he returned to the ranch where he spent his entire life with the exception of two years serving in the US Marine Corps during World War II. Next to his family, Roy loved farming and ranching -- always working toward improving the ranch land and cattle herd. He felt he gained a lot from his two years at Aggie School and retained a lifelong interest in education.

Albert & Gladys Stangl Memorial Scholarship

Albert and Gladys Stangl were a well known farm couple in the Spring Lake Community, southeast of Java in Walworth County, South Dakota. He felt that 4-H Club work was an important educational force in the State. Gladys (Tyner) Stangl was active in community affairs and had been a home extension club member for several years.
All four children were active in 4-H Club work.

Clarence and Betty Stockland Scholarship

Clarence Stockland graduated from SDSU with a B.S. degree in 1932, and a M.S. degree in agriculture in 1934. He joined the USDA-Soil Conservation Service in 1935 as a Soil Scientist and later was assigned to the Regional Office of SCS for work on the Water Resources Development Projects. Betty Dawes Stockland attended Fullerton Junior College in California. Mrs. Stockland was active in real estate as a broker-owner from 1956 to 1970.

Mathew Tiernan Scholarship

Mathew Tiernan had learned hard work, how to save and he had acquired a sound sense of values. He loved the prairie and owned more than 3000 acres of land and a sizeable herd of cattle. He wanted his property to be used to provide an educational opportunity for young people -- an opportunity he did not have himself. The income from 1080 acres of land he gave to SDSU makes these scholarships possible .

Paul Bauerle Scholarship

The Paul Bauerle Scholarship Fund was established in 1987 by Mr. Bauerle, a Flushing, New York, resident because of his interest in natural resource conservation. The purpose of the fund is to encourage students in restoration, and enhancement of nature.

SD Corn Utilization Council

The purpose of the Corn Utilization Council is the investment of this state's corn checkoff dollars into areas of research, market development, promotion and education for the benefit and best return on investment for corn growers. As part of education program, a scholarship has been established promoting youth and the ag industry and investing in the future of South Dakota.

Wayne Covey/Dakota Pride

The Dakota Pride Cooperative is a dynamic young cooperative serving southwestern South Dakota and northwestern Nebraska. The Cooperative services ag and fuel interests within this region. The Cooperative has established a scholarship to assist students majoring in agriculture and attending SDSU who come from this service region.

Morgan Genetics

The Morgan Genetics Scholarship was established by retired professor Dr. Walt Morgan to encourage and stimulate interest in genetics research. Areas of interest include animal genetics and plant or microbial genetics.

Rogen-Trooien Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by Alvera Rogen in honor of her husband and the Rogen-Trooien family. This endowment will support worthy college students from their home area and will help to underwrite maintenance of the family farming heritage at Oak Lake.

Central Livestock Associaton

This scholarship was established to provide a scholarship to a SDSU student who is a customer/member or a member of the family is a customer/member of the association.

Donald Tollefson Scholarship

The Donald Tollefson Scholarship was established in memory of Donald Tollefson. Mr. Tollefson lived and farmed his entire life on the family farm near Colton where he was actively engaged in the growing of certified seed. Don was a director of the Minnehaha Extension board, South Dakota Farm Bureau Board of Directors and was an original incorporator of the Minnehaha Community Rural Water System.

Lawrence DeHaan Memorial

This scholarship was established to honor the memory of Lawrence DeHaan. Mr. DeHaan was associated with Sokota Hybrid Producers (now Agri-Pro) of Brookings. He was responsible for organizing the State Horseman's Association, the State Quarter Horse Association and the Lake Benton annual trail ride. He loved young people and he conducted 4-H horse clinics and adult clinics at several colleges and for organizations in various states.

South Dakota Bankers Association

The South Dakota Bankers Association was established to provide financial support to a student in the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences with an interest in finance.

U. J. Norgaard Memorial

This scholarship was established in honor of the memory of U. J. Norgaard and to encourage those people who have an interest in Extension. Mr. Norgard was the Extension Agronomist at South Dakota State College from 1939 until 1962.

Muchow Family Scholarship

The Muchow Family Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Martin Muchow. Mr. Muchow was a 4-H leader for 25 years and served as a county and state officer of the South Dakota 4-H Leaders Association. The three Muchow children are all graduates of SDSU.

Ross D. Davies Memorial

The Ross Davies Memorial Scholarship is available because of efforts of family friends and the South Dakota Chapter of the Soil Conservation Society of America, to establish in his memory a fitting tribute to a dedicated citizen who provided much of the leadership for the development of Soil Conservation in South Dakota.

CENEX

The Cenex Foundation was established to promote cooperative education at the university level and create an awareness of career possibilities as managers and executives at the local, regional and inter-regional cooperative level and to provide information and training on cooperatives and their role in the free enterprise system.

Benson-Quinn

The Benson-Quinn Scholarships are funded by Benson-Quinn, a grain marketing company based in Minneapolis, MN.

Tri-State Neighbor Scholarship

The Tri-State Neighbor offers this scholarship to help farm and ranch youth from the region pursue careers in agricultural communications.

Gary and Joan Olson

This scholarship was established by the Olsons and their family to give financial support to students who are majoring in agricultural economics or a ag related field.

Gordon Huber Scholarship

Gordon Huber was born and raised in Clark County and ran a grain and livestock farm until his retirement. Farming was his life's work and hobby as well. He was active in the Clark County Conservation and Soils District. Gordon established this scholarship to assist deserving students at South Dakota State University who are interested in agriculture.

R. Milton and Aline Rich

This scholarship was established by R. Milton and Aline Rich in gratitude for the many years of pleasurable association with South Dakota State University and its students, staff, faculty and alumni, and with the desire to permanently provide a measure of assistance to students with the same spirit and dedication which guided Mr. and Mrs. Rich in their relationships with SDSU.

Raymond Lund Memorial

Raymond Lund was an agriculturist and water conservationist. He spent the first two years of his career on the teaching staff at the Polytechnic Institute of Billings, Montana. He was later named a county agent and spent the rest of his career in conservation positions. Mr. Lund received numerous awards through his work in the conservation field.

Harvest States Cooperative

The Harvest States Cooperative Scholarship is annually awarded to students who demonstrate strong academic performance, scholastic leadership, and school involvement.

David Henry Memorial

David Henry graduated from SDSU in 1938 and worked in the dairy industry until joining Land O'Lakes in 1960. He served as president of the farmer cooperative from 1967 until his retirement in 1974. It was during this period the cooperative experienced its greatest growth, with sales more than doubling and assets increasing nearly three times.

Orville and Enolia Bentley Research Award

The Orville and Enolia Bentley Research Award is intended as a reward for excellence in scholarly activities and as an inspiration to academic and intellectual achievement.

A. A. Hofer Agricultural Research Award

The A. A. Hofer Agricultural Research Award is used to recognize exceptional effort in agricultural research by a student at this institution.

Jules Larsen

Mr. Larsen was a third-generation farmer in Union County . He was regarded as an innovative farmer who always kept up to date on the latest farming practices.

Harold A. Lackey Ag Scholarship

Harold Lackey was actively interested in all aspects of agriculture and farm management. He was a crop reporter for many years and was a member of the Minnehaha County Crop Improvement Association. His strong support of education makes it particularly fitting to have a scholarship established in Mr. Lackey's name.

Geneva V. Croll

For 36 years, Geneva Croll was a devoted member and friend of the Cooperative Extension Staff of South Dakota from 1933, until her retirement as Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Extension in 1969.

Cecil Byg Family

Cecil Byg was born in Minnehaha County and graduated from South Dakota State Agricultural School at Brookings. He farmed for 25 years, raising four daughters and one son. He also worked for the Farm Bureau. Cecil has been a lifelong resident of Minnehaha county and enjoys his family history and the early history of the county.

Colonel Martin L. Taylor and Irene Taylor Scholarship

Colonel Taylor graduated from SDSU in 1932 with an Electrical Engineering degree and as a commissioned lieutanent. He served a total of 36 years in the Officer's Reserve corps. Colonel Taylor established this scholarship in memory of his wife, Irene. They raised three daughters.

Farm Credit Services of America Scholarship

The Farm Credit Services Scholarship is annually awarded to a student who demonstrates strong academic performance, scholastic leadership, school involvement, and is taking coursework emphasizing agriculture or has ag-related background.

Hilbert Bogue Family Scholarship

Hilbert, a livestock feeder and farmer, received the "Distinguished Award" for outstanding service to the people of South Dakota in 1971 and was named Eminent Farmer in 1983. He served in the SD Senate from 1955-63. One of the many accomplishments he will be remembered for was passing legislation which established and funded the Southeast South Dakota Experiment Farm at Beresford.

Lorin Riveland Scholarship

Lorin Riveland was born in 1883. He married Cora Mitchell at Pontiac, IL in 1909 and they settled on a farm near New Effington SD where they resided until they retired. Several artifacts from the lives of the Rivelands are at the Ag Heritage Museum. The Lorin Riveland Scholarship was established by donations from Dr. Clara Riveland.

Clark Schoening Scholarship

Clark Schoening grew up on a grain and livestock farm in Iowa. He graduated from SDSU in 1987 with majors in Ag Business and Ag Economics. He worked in the banking industry in South Dakota for several years following graduation. He is currently an internal auditor for Wells Fargo & Company in Des Moines, IA.

SD Physically Disadvantaged/Sheridan Wikle

Sheridan Wikle was born near DeSmet SD. His father passed away when he was 5 months old and his mother moved the family to a homestead at Bison SD. Her goal was to see that all three of her children received high school educations which they did. Mr. Wikle went to Aggied school in Brookings and graduated from SDSU. He was a county agent at Faith SD and worked fro ACRS in Wisconsin, Mississippi and Missouri. He is retired and currently resides in the Bison area.

Edith Stokes

Edith Stokes was a graduate of Brookings High School and South Dakota State University. She held many public offices and was actively engaged in policitcs for many years. She did the preliminary groundwork on the South Dakota Memorial Art Center for the Federation of Women's clubs. She was a charter member of the Moody county Historical Societyand a charter member of the Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of the advisory council of the State Commission on Aging.

Elias And Rose Rezek

The children of Elias and Rose Rezek have established a scholarship for students majoring in agriculture at SDSU in honor of their deceased parents who were pioneer homesteaders in Charles Mix County, SD. The Rezek families' history with SDSU dates all the way back to 1918. Nineteen members of the family have either graduated or are attending SDSU.

Delbert Bender Scholarship

Delbert Bender farmed east of Mitchell for approximately 50 years. Candidates for this award should seriously consider the future of the farms of this state and use their time and talents to further this industry, and do so in a way that preserves our delicate environment. This scholarship fund has been established to preserve these attitudes for the American farmer, and specifically the South Dakota farmer.

Davison County Crop Improvement Association Annual Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Davison County Crop Improvement Association and is presented to a student from Davison County majoring in agriculture.

Gene "Doc" Arnold Scholarship

For more than 25 years, W. Eugene Arnold played an important part in his student's lives on the campus of South Dakota State University. From 1988 until the time of his death in 1999, he served as the Associate Dean and Director of Academic Programs for the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences.
